Useful Sites

Family Tree: This is a newer version of New Family Search. With a Family Tree account, you have access to free records. With this access, you can find, save and share your ancestors' records. There is also free help available and it also allows collaboration with family members. You can either create a regular 'Family Search' account, which is for the general public, or an LDS 'Family Search' account for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Ancestry.Com: This website is not free, however, you may find it well worth the subscription. Using this site, you can simply type in a name of an ancestor and search for them in numerous kinds of records (ex: birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, census records in multiple countries, US Immigration Collection, newspapers, military records, pictures, law records,etc.).  You can then browse, and narrow, the results you receive and gather information on that ancestor and their family.
Family Search: This website is very similar to Ancestry.Com, but does not exactly have as many records available for viewing. It is also free. You simply type in the name of your ancestor and can search for them. Here, you can also search by area and use different types of search engines.
Family Search Wiki: This is a unique search engine where instead of searching for names, you search using key names. For example, if you were trying to find a date for an ancestor's death and knew only that they died in Iowa, you could type 'Iowa cemeteries' into the search bar and scan the results.
The US GenWeb Project: This site is run by a group of volunteers who work together in every state and county to compile genealogical research into websites. If you are researching a family and know only where they live, this would be a wonderful website to visit.
The World GenWeb Project: This is exactly like the US GenWeb Project but on a global scale. If you are researching ancestors originating from other countries, this is the perfect website to browse. There are GenWeb projects for many countries around the world, so it may be useful to type in the name of the country you want to research next to genweb.org to see if your country has a website. (ex:canadagenweb.org)
Roots Web: This is a branch off of Ancestry.Com. It uses that search engine as well as its own to search, and also lists many other websites that would be useful to visit for Family History research.
Library of Congress: I know, this may seem strange, but if you are searching for information in a certain census, you can search for the census record here!
Cyndi's List: Here, there are literally thousands of links to help you find places to research when you run out of ideas.
Early LDS: For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, you can search here to find more information on your pioneer ancestry.
Fold3/Footnote: This is another subscription website where you can type in the name of the person you are looking for, collect and save data and research.
Google is another great resource to use. Simply type in 'genealogy website' or 'family research website' or even 'ancestor website' and it will come up with many things to search.
